You are aware that this Council is confronted from time to time with the problem of child labour in the Carpet Industry. To overcome the problem of child labour, the Council has formulated a Code of Conduct for its Member-Exporters. The Code of Conduct requires its Members to ensure that his/her Carpets are woven only on the Looms registered by this Council having no child labour as prohibited by the Child Labour Prohibition & Regulation Act, 1986.
This Council has engaged an independent Professional Organization for conducting random inspection of the looms to detect illegal child labour. During their monitoring of Looms for the period 1st July to 15th October, 2009 in U.P. & Rajasthan, they have found 107 looms ( enclosed Annexure – 1 of 55 looms in State of U.P. and Annexure – 2 of 52 looms in State of Rajasthan) out of 19341 looms using illegal child labour and hence are blacklisted.
Members are advised not to get their carpet/durries woven on these looms as it will be violation of the Code of Conduct adopted by this Council. In case any Member is reported to be getting his/her carpet/durries woven on such looms, action will be taken against him in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Conduct of the Council.
Yours faithfully,
SHIV KUMAR GUPTA
Executive Director-cum-Secretary
